„For in many things we all offend. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man. He is able also with a bridle to lead about the whole body. For if we put bits into the mouths of horses, that they may obey us: and we turn about their whole body. Behold also ships, whereas they are great and are driven by strong winds, yet are they turned about with a small helm, whithersoever the force of the governor willeth. Even so the tongue is indeed a little member and boasteth great things. Behold how small a fire kindleth a great wood. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is placed among our members, which defileth the whole body and inflameth the wheel of our nativity, being set on fire by hell. „
James 3.2-6 (DRB)

Power of Words

We speak what we want and how we want to. We speak things without even considering that things we say may actually come true (like “it is killing me”). Words have power, power to build or to destroy. It is your choice what you speak.

I’m not talking only about a sin but about control over our life. And also it is about creative power of our words. First part is saying that if we can control our words we can also control our sinful nature. The control over our sinful nature starts from the control over our words because “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” In this way we are not only controlling our sinful nature but also a content of our heart and mind is being changed, because we feed our mind and our heart with words. Both words spoken by us and those spoken by other people (that is why it is important to listen to mass readings and read Bible on your own). But I believe that the second part is even more important – creative power of our words. When God created man into his image, scripture says that man become a living creature. In this place Hebrew text says that man became another speaking spirit. God was creating by speaking words and because we are created into his image then our words should also have some sort of creative power. They should be able to create both good and bad reality. If you keep saying I won’t manage it, I won’t manage it; then you will not manage. On the other hand if you keep saying God’s Word “I can do all in Christ who strengthens me” that’s what you will have. Our words are creating reality around us and it will be or reality of truth and God’s Word or of defeat and lies. So if even you have failed in something don’t talk about it, speak the Word of God because his Word always has something good to say about us. And when you will speak his Word it will change your situation.
